INFO
Soil provides basic support for the production of the majority of our food, wood, fibres and other materials. It is also a critical resource for many other ecosystem services including carbon (C) sequestration and regulation of biogeochemical cycles.
Soil is the largest pool of organic C on the surface of the Earth and small deviations have immediate and significant effects in the global C balance and in climate change. The use of inappropriate agricultural practices and management strategies are among the main factors responsible for large emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases from soil to atmosphere. Therefore, soil is nowadays considered as the main regulating factor for the global climate change in terrestrial ecosystems and knowledge of C turnover rates has a global dimension. For most European countries it is mandatory to estimate and report their soil C stocks as well as foreseen changes (IPCC, 2014). Research in soil C dynamics is also relevant for a better understanding of processes affecting global CO2 emissions and to promote valid management strategies for the mitigation of their effects. The general objective of the INTERCARBON Project is studying C dynamics and the estimation of organic matter turnover rates in representative Mediterranean soils from Southern Spain. A modern, technically advanced and multidisciplinary approach is proposed for the geochemical study of selected soils from natural and managed ecosystems including forest, dehesas and agricultural systems under different management strategies. We hope INTERCARBON will shed light on the study of C turnover rates in Mediterranean soils, both for bulk organic matter as well as for its main biogenic components (polysaccharides, lignin, proteins and lipids). It is also intended to complement the general knowledge about the processes involved in C dynamics and sequestration in Mediterranean soils, both for surface C stocks and deep in the soil profile. Finally, it is expected that the acquired knowledge about organic matter structure and function and about the main factors affecting its dynamic in soils, provide clues for the conversion towards restorative systems and to adopt effective management strategies promoting C conservation. |
